H-Scene Count- 48(kinda)
Length- 30-50 hours
Created by Tenco, localised by Fruitbat and J-ast. Fantranslated by surferdude.
Finally. Eiyu Senki(Sengoku Rance lite as I call it) is out and done by J-ast. If anyone reads this, just play the fan translated version. It fixes a few things, gives difficulties and adds the console content into the PC release. It is better in basically every way.
Anyway, Eiyu Senki’s official PC release is what this post is based on. It only took way to long for this to come out. The original game is from 2012, Fruitbat released it on console in 2015, and Jast finally released the adult version in 2017. The fantransaltion finished in 2016 and realy, I should have just played that since I’m never touching this game again.
Story
So the game starts and Himiko of Zipang is rushing her army into Oda Nobunaga’s camp. After a resounding defeat Himiko returns home but on the way almost gets killed by a bandit. Suddenly, lightning and a weird Rance looking guy beats up the bandits. The guy collapses and Himiko for some reason decides he is like an older brother. She tries to recruit him when he wakes up and tells him of her prophecy. The world will end if the world isn’t united. So after recovering and for some reason falling in love with Himiko, our hero fights in her name and takes over Zipang. After doing so a friend of theirs goes rogue for reasons and vanishes.
The rest of the game is conquering areas while learning about why she went rogue. Then learning about who the protag is and what this world really is. It gets interesting at the end, but the middle can drag a lot. A lot of countries have nothing to do with the plot or are just small hints before you reach the end and everything starts getting unveiled. That’s not to say all the countries aren’t interesting, they all have gimmicks that stand out for comedy and another gender bent hero to join your army. There is fun to some of the characters and stuff, but eventually you end up with 70 characters and way to many character events versus gameplay.
Gameplay
The above is your main event screen. Every event in the game is a mission, where you use your characters skills to pass requirements. Most of these are character events, which grant new moves and other bonuses to your party members, or site seeing events where you get some gold or an item at the end of a short skit that may mention a famous place in that part of the world. Some events are combat missions that may or may not advance the story and then you just have marches where you attack a town.
Combat is very like Sengoku Rance to me. You have a 3*3 grid where you drop 6 units down. Each unit has up to 4 attacks and a passive stat buff/debuff skill. Your only goal is to kill every enemy on the other side in the time limit. If you finish within 25 turns you gain double the normal bonus units.
All unit types have advantages and disadvantages to other unit types so there is strategy for most of the game. Positioning is also important as all moves have specific ranges. Skills have costs that you have to mange as skills become your only real way to win quickly as the game continues. So high defense troops who take hits to generate brave are actually useful.
The main issue with all of this is how boring it gets. Enemies rarely attack you or pose a real threat, and you have infinite turns. Every turn you get some gold based on how much land you own, so if you can’t win a fight you can just sit there racking up money. If they do attack you only need to defeat them once. Next time they attack they’ll send out the same units with 10-40% of the units, making defending a joke. You just sit there and once you have enough gold, you buy troops and sweep through the enemy. I didn’t do this much and had a few difficult moments, but even then the game was mostly easy save for the first hard route area, Russia and the end game stuff. Hard route is going through the toughest enemies first, which gives you an item and gives a troop count up to all enemies in the game. Early on you don’t have a lot of troops or variety so Inida can be a bit challenging. Russia sucks because if you go their early you lose half your troops every fight. And the end up has some over the top enemies that finally take a bit of thought to kill, or you can use the overpowered units you have to have to win in a couple of rounds.
I’m not saying the core game is bad though. Just tedious. If you spaced out play sessions and balanced character events with combat or other things then it wouldn’t be that bad. It just gets old a bit to quickly and is broken far to easily.
H and other stuff
The main compalint many people have with Eiyu is its h scenes. Not the content, which is mostly vanilla stuff with some weird thrown in at times, but the number of girls with actual scenes. Eiyu Senki on PC has 70 characters. The game has 48 h scenes so at best 70% or so could get one. But then you learn most of the girls with scenes get two and Himiko gets 5 or 6. Arthur, the secondary main heroine, gets 3. So of the 70 characters, only 32 get scenes and some of those are weird. 3 of the 48 are what I would consider joke scenes or things that don’t belong as there are scenes just like them that have cgs, that for some reason are not in the gallery. Example, William Kidd has a scene where her bikini is just gone you get full frontal of her. This is not in the gallery, Hannibal gets a scene where you enter room with her chestplate off and she talks about having kids when she learns you are attracted to her, then the scene ends. This is in the gallery. It’s weird.
Anyway, as for standout content. The game has 3 threesomes, a tentacle scene, lots of bottom but not top nudity in h scenes, and a lot of virginity loss. Every girl is a virgin(and most are lolis/pettanko) and it mentions this in every girls first scene.
I do like the music and the character art is great. Everyone looks unique and interesting or at least stands out. Which makes the fact less then half of them have porn that much more depressing really. Especially the Knights of the Round. Camelot has 12 characters. 3 of them have h scenes. One is a joke of a scene. Literally every character I liked from Camelot didn’t get a scene. This happened a lot near the end of the game.
Verdict and Save
The game is alright. It’s definitely a one and done thing though. It has interesting ideas and if I hadn’t played much better conquering Rpgs this might have been better recommended from me, but Sengoku Rance exists and Eiyu really feels like a lesser Sengoku Rance. Part of that is Himiko is such a weak heroine of a conquer the world game. Gold, the sequel, does better with Masamune who actively helps you sleep around and tries to make you great. Himiko gets jealous a lot of the time and other then her comedy near the beginning doesn’t have much else likable about her.
There’s one point in the game where our character is called the King of Lust. At this point you have at best 10 h scenes. You’ve slept with less a 1/4 of your army. But when you go about taking that country suddenly porn just starts coming in because you can finally finish character events. It felt weird and highlighted how off the porn is placed with almost all of it being in the final fourth of the game. Which is the case for a lot of the game’s mechanics and issues. It just has horrible pacing all around which turns it from a good game to a mediocre one and is my most major issue. Pacing is really important for games and this just does a poor job of it.
Save has all cgs, music, and scenes unlocked. It also has an endgame save to fight the final boss or do the extra challenge dungeon thing. All it gives is items that you don’t need so I figured I’d give a save that was setup to take it on if someone wanted to. The save has all hard route items and everyone cleared.
Note: I don’t know if this works with the fan translation. Since that version has two extra h scenes and a couple cgs if this save does work it won’t fill in everything. I’m not replaying the entire game for that though.
