Arms Devicer!+ is a RPG Maker VXAce game where you play as Rio, a busty blonde naive girl who after her mom died left home and struck out for herself. Meeting Cecilia, a guild member, Rio gets brought into the guild to fight monsters and help people out.
Story
The main plot of Arms is light, you work for a guild which tells you to here and kill x boss until you fight a dragon(with some generic sidequests from the guild). Then you get to pick a route to get an actual story.
Unlike most of other RPG Maker games, Arms has 6 distinct routes depending on who you get close to during the common story. There is the two female friends, the evil dark skinned rogue, the ugly mind wizard, the worthless male friend with a crush(who gets NTR’d in his own route and another one), and solo plus an extra “route” once you beat some of the others. The characters actually have some degree of personality, with Rio having much more character then the heroine from Parallel Fantasy, CircleKame’s first game.
Each route has its own town and story, though the stories carry little impact. Few give an emotional reason to due anything, instead just being go kill/find x. They are a nice touch, as each route gets its own dungeons, bosses, and events that help set up the world. When I finished the final route, I just didn’t feel like most of the game mattered, with only the solo route and the two girls being the only standout and even then, just barely above the rest.
Gameplay
The game plays as a simple RPG maker turn based system. You get some cool options but the combat itself is very simple, and would have benefited a lot from an auto option.
Some of those cool options are summons. You can buy items that when equipped give you summon spells that when cast give you new party members until you sleep in your bed or unequip the item. These are great as they give you a lot of options for your party, which helps a lot at the beginning where you might not want to pay to have a party member every time you go out, since the human party members charge you to join your party. Plus you can only have one human party member, so having two summons to fill out the party is useful.
You can upgrade your weapon(an ARM), which has 5 final forms depending on the route you upgrade it in, all with different effects like reflecting magic or hitting twice. You can wear a few different outfits, which include a waitress, slave bondage, mech armor, and a dancer outfit all with bottomless and topless variants and stats differing on the clothes(being naked gives a lot of strength for exmaple). All costumes have cutins for being ripped, though few things can rip clothes. There are also cutins for all your special moves, making them take a little longer then they should.
As for other equipment, you get clothes and three accessory slots. I’ll mention clothes a bit later on, but as for accessories there are a lot of options. They range from status immunities, xp increasing, summons, spell learning, among a number of others. There is a nice variety and give plenty of choice.
The game also has a mastery system where you learn spells by equipping certain accessories and gaining AP, which you don’t see how much you get. It also has clothes being ripped up and a lust system for triggering certain h scenes and changing how much Rio will wear. The game also has a bonus dungeon where you can earn items that let you instakill weak enemies, increase run speed to ridiculous levels(which is really nice), and get the key to replay h scenes.
Titles can be acquired for doing certain tasks. In the replay room area, there are two doors. The right one leads to h scenes, the other a title room. You gain titles for most h related action, doing requests(sidequests in the guild), and for how high your lust stat is. The titles on the left actually change your character stats, which can make you very powerful or very not as powerful, though your character will always be the strongest human party member.
If I had any real problems with the game, it would come in two things. One being the text speed. Unlike most VN’s or other games, you can’t hit the confirm key to speed up text, you need to wait as it slowly prints. So I found myself using the skip key(W) to fast forward to the next line instead. Besides W, the A and S keys also do things. A is the backlog, S speeds up the entire game and crashes it during scene transitions.
The other issue I have is the difficulty curve gets screwed near the end. The game starts out dangerous, but near the end if I didn’t have an instakill party move I would never have been able to get lose scenes. Enemies just couldn’t hurt my main party.
Another thing to note is the translated version comes with an instakill party move and an instakill enemies move, that feel very debug like. One other small issue I had is the dungeons are very bland, with nothing to see or interact with.
H scenes and other things
While I wish I could say all the routes had different h scenes, most don’t. All routes have rape/prostitution to some capacity. The friends route is the only route with girls other then Rio having sex, and male friend is all NTR and same with ugly guy and then every other route is samey.
The h itself is good, with thrusting sounds to add some effect, and decent writing with variable lengths plus good art that is not from some modeling program. The variety is nice, with tentacles, animals, NTR, prostitution, gangbang/rape, pregnancy, and a few other things. The main theme is degeneration as Rio becomes more of a whore, and I feel the game does a decent job of it, even if some scenes have her change to quickly. The scenes work in chains, as in ones in the same chain use the same cgs and idea of what will happen with Rio just becoming more dirty or the male/s becoming more bold.
One more thing, this game does getting h scenes well. They are not exactly hidden, but you can play through the entire game(except the bad guy routes) and never see a single one. Sure you might get one from losing a certain fight, but unless you search you won’t find any. There a few that are hidden and hard to find, but most are just out of the way. I wish more h games made h scenes something to find or earn, and not just rewards to string the player along.
Other assists(sprites, tiles, and music) are mostly generic RPG Maker fair, with more character variety due to VXAce’s character builder. The art does leave a bit to be desired since all the men are silhouettes with dicks, and if you don’t like large boobs there is little sex wise for you here. The enemies are nice though, as in-battle they move around the screen. It’s nice to see the effect, even if it does nothing.
Overall this is one of the best RPG Maker games I’ve played. It has some issues(text speed, bland dungeons, the later game being a joke in difficulty), but overall it’s an actually solid game with a decent length. It’s definitely worth a try at least, as few RPG maker games feel as complete as this one does. It has a lot of nifty features, and collectibles in the titles plus a challenge dungeon that unlocks some nice features. The story may be weak, but the rest of the game is quite good.
Save contains all h scenes and titles unlocked. Left door is titles, right is is scenes. Th arcane circle lets you restart the game’s story and reset your stats, while the mirror brings you back to the main town to explore the world in free roam.
