Yay. The first otome 18+ RPG for the blog. Yay. The first female main character game where the goal isn’t to get her horrible raped and turned into a prostitute. Nope, our goal is instead to marry her to horrible choices instead.
This is a very customized RPG Maker MV game.
Story
Finally reaching her savings goal, herbalist Maria goes to her master that she intends to marry, who then steals that money and marries his other disciple because he got her pregnant. He taunts Maria, leading her to proclaiming that she will just buy a husband instead. So she goes out to get bodyguards to help her gather materials for making money. Those bodyguards all become her bachelors.
Her 5 bachelors are each in enormous debt. Save and earn money, fix these men’s horrible issues with cash and find love with men 20+ years older then our main heroine. Your choices are the fallen full of himself noble, the gambling thief, the drunk warrior, the elf who gets cheated easily, or the pervy(and impotent) 70+ necromancer. Great options. Go dungeon delving with these older gents, gather supplies and sell to marry! And that’s it. No story to the dungeons, no world lore(and this got a sequel! Maybe the fandiscs go into world lore or something but how do you do a spiritual sequel in a world without lore?), the master never shows up again, nothing. Just fight, get money, and get woo’ed/woo.
So if you play this and go into the options, you’ll see an option just titled sexual. If you switch this to off you get a fairly different experience then if you leave it on. You see, instead of just a fade to black like most all ages versions of h games, this game has completely different scenes instead. For example, the necromancer’s fourth scene with sex on has Maria almost get raped by some strangers only for the necromancer to kill the would be rapists and then he takes advantage of her while also telling her about himself a bit. All ages though the guy just shows up, tells Maria about what he did with the latest money he earned and invites her back to his place, which she refuses and runs. Both sexual and not sexual end with marriage, but for this game the not sexual content leaves a lot to be desired. Consider it like two different routes for the guys, with one focusing on adult relations and the other being PG, but also avoids talking about anything important. The all ages content for some reason skimps on some of the important stuff. Basically this game surprised me with this. I didn’t expect how radical the change would be.
Gameplay
A very simple game. Calling it a dungeon crawler fells wrong, though you do go to dungeons you can only progress forward. You grab the odd item that shows up in each spot and move on until Maria runs out of stamina or you run out of supplies to keep the guy fighting. The men are the fighters and each has specific dungeons they perform better in for getting loot and get some stat boosts in, and each has a single special move that save for the thief just lets you be immortal in combat while the skill is active. The necromancer for instance can paralyze enemies for 3 turns with a 100% accuracy. It gets boring fairly quickly.
The other half of the game is taking the supplies you gained to make potions to sell. Every day a single potion type sells at 3x value, so basically you make whatever sells that day as much as you can, sell it, and go dungeon crawling with your preferred fighter. After every crawl you pay the man some money and that acts as his experience points. Then if you have enough cash you go to the man and pay off some of his debts to see a scene. Do this until you get their ending.
A good part of the game though is that there is no true ending. Once you finish a guy’s story you can jump to the next right away and just use whoever is your best dungeoner to get money quick. It makes getting the other four way faster then having to go from the start every time. It helps that once you start clearing the dungeons you will eventually start fighting what the game calls legend bosses. These give about double what the normal bosses give, but more importantly is that beating one unlocks the final dungeon area. It has no loot but enemies are worth 5k. For reference, in other areas enemies are only worth 200. The boss here is worth 50,000, normal bosses 10k, and legends 40k(20, but to fight them requires an effect that doubles earnings for the area anyway). This helps a lot for getting the remaining guys. Also, beating the extra area gives you a short scene with the guy you beat it with before the credits play. No idea why.
H and Other stuff
Scenes are kinda weird. First, only the guys are voiced, which for otome is the standard I guess. Even with that though the cgs usually focus on the girls body with more guy then in male focused titles, but the girl is usually the focus save for a small number of shots. Also, some of the guys are basically rapists. For a romance themed title a lot of the guys have their first scene with them basically forcing themselves on the heroine, only stopping right before penetration because she’s a virgin. Maria actually doesn’t mind getting basically raped by some of them. It’s really weird. And from what I know of 18+ otome, not that unusual. It’s apparently really rare for heroines in these games to have both the desire for sex and full consent for all scenes. It’s the same issue I have with bl and yuri where rape and forcing sex even in romance focused titles is the norm, at least from what I’ve seen and heard.
Anyway, scenes are of a decent length and each guy gets like 5 of them. I would actually consider this to be basically a nukige if it wasn’t for the gameplay taking up so much of the game time. As for sex content it’s mostly basic positions with light S&M is some of them. Foreplay is always male on female. Some rapey scenes do happen.
This has nothing to do with the visuals or the h scenes, I just have some stuff about this game I want to ramble about. So Maria got conned out of her money essentially. So she goes to find some help and ends up with 5 options that are also her marriage choices, these being a drunk, a gambler, an elf who is easily tricked, a destitute and cowardly but still proud/full of himself noble, and a pervy old man necromancer. I get their had to be a reason Maria’s money skills would be important to the guys, but man these are horrible choices. Usually otome games give you men who are way to skilled so getting a set with guys with such obvious negative traits is both refreshing as a man who reads otome, but also kinda weird and slightly disturbing in a way. Like, why in the world should I want the heroine to get with any of these guys?
Verdict and Save
You know, for this being an RPG Maker game I would never have figured that out if it wasn’t for the file formats and the title screen? There’s just so little from the standard stuff that I’m used to and I wish more RPGMaker games went this far to make the engine their own. Anyway, I think this game is a decent read. It gives two romance arcs per guy(18+ and all ages), so about an hour+ of reading per guy. The gameplay is boring and bad, but does serve as a vehicle for the plot enough that I don’t hate it, I just wish there was more depth to it.
As basically the only 18+ otome game, its both the best and worst one. Overall decent, not something I would go out of my way to recommend to anyone that isn’t already reading otome. Even for them it’s kind of a hard sell. Definitely the kind of game you should get a full save for and just read through instead of playing.
One issue I want to bring up though is the endings, the after stories really. They all seem to set up sequels that I’m not sure exist. Especially the drunks, his seems most set up to lead to this game’s sequel but all the endings introduce new characters and Maria’s children and seem to hint at stuff that might happen. It’s weird how sequel hook most of them feel even though the actual sequel doesn’t seem to actually care for any of these.
Save has all scenes unlocked(each guy has 8 total events and each can be replayed, both all ages and sexual), and a save with all guys at max level with enough potions that you should be able to clear the bonus dungeon if you want to see the content from clearing it.
