Leviathan

H Scene Count-~20

Created by TechnoBrake, translated by Kagura Games

Length- 10+, a lot of that being equipment material grinding

Purchase

So this is the newest from Kagura Games, and that is true, but this is not new to the English market. Rule of Succubus(the other Technobrake game I reviewed) and this one were both released on Dlstie sometime in the last year or so, with horrible English. They fixed that up and threw it on Steam and the other usual stores, better then ever.

Honestly Rule and Leviathan are very similar so I will be making a lot of comparisons between the two.

Story

You were exiled, I think, to some prison island guarded by a water dragon known as the Leviathan. It destroys your boat and now you want to escape this dangerous island so you set off looking for clues on how to fight the monster. Turns out the monster have done some cult stuff, and this island has a bad case of zombies because of them.

So this is almost the exact same plot as Rule. You are on a boat, you wash up on a beach after the final boss destroys your boat, your only goal is to leave. Change water dragon with succubus and they are basically the same game. The key difference is in the gender’s of the protagonists. Rule is male so he gets sexy ladies, Leviathans lead is a female elf so she gets dick monsters. What equality!

Gameplay

So our heroine is very customizable. Every piece of gear shows up on her battle art, and you can even pick if she’s a dark elf, a white elf, and from two options of hair color. Only those last ones show up in h scenes as every scene finds a way to have her naked save for the part of the game where she’s forced to wear a specific set of clothing.

Anyway, this, like Rule, is a survival RPG Maker game. You have 5 gauges that are basically timers. If they hit zero you get a debuff that will likely kill you unless you deal with that gauge immediately, making this more extreme then Rule’s. I also think Rule only had three at most, hunger, thirst and sleep. This also adds cleanliness and need to pee, because female. Hunger and thirst deal 10% of your health every few steps when empty, sleep does the same but also cuts your max health in half, and I don’t know what the other two do. You urinate in your sleep if pee is full, and when your cleanliness is empty you get stink clouds in combat and I think h scene text changes to reflect it.

So each gauge has a way to deal with it, but those aren’t your only gauges. Weapons and armor also have durability! If they break you lose all there stats until you fix them, which means you are likely dead since you don’t level in this. All your stats are tied to the equipment, so the game’s loop is deal with gauges, get materials from randomized enemies and environmental things, make better gear, fix gear if broken, continue exploring until you find the next metal and repeat until the end. It’s the fixing that ruins this for me. While the materials to make repair kits aren’t rare, it takes a while until you can get them fast and the amount of kits you need goes up with the level of your gear. So end game stuff needs 3-4 each, while the starting stuff needed only a single one, but they break at the same rate! It makes the start of the game crawl as you need to grind stone to make repair kits and better gear, which is only half the battle as you probably want to make aesthetic things. But those all need thread which you need for lockpicks which break every time you use them, success or not and you need lockpicks to beat the game.

Let me just say few games benefit from forcing a player to open menus to eat food and drink water. Adding urniate and showering to that doesn’t improve the game to me. It makes more tedious busy work that bores me. I’d rather be fighting but I have to mine or my sword will break. My armor is broken so this tier 1 enemy went from dealing 2 damage to 20 and now I lost 10 minutes of play time to bad run away luck. You do have quick fix and eat/drink kills that help somewhat, but they needed hotkeys. Also the whole nighttime mecahnic is almost impossible to see in and has unkillable enemies for 75% of the game; it’s atmospheric, sure, but also a pace killer.

There is character progression in this, somewhat. You have two skill trees. Attack skills and survival stuff. Survival is mostly make tools break less which is nice. Attack is your battle skills, which while you can’t use a lot can help end fights faster when grinding gear. You get points from fights so as you grind you’ll get most of these.

So things Rule of Succubus does better. Because you are male you only need to make better gear, aesthetic gear doesn’t exist. You don’t need to worry about weapons breaking. You know what you are fighting before you run into the enemies making grinding easy.  You don’t need to pee every 5 minutes. Those are the main ones.

H and Other stuff

Scenes are either with monsters or humans. Monsters usually don’t talk but if they do, they are demeaning and mean. Same with humans actually, even the ones you consent to sleep with just call you a slut and talk down to you the entire time. It’s weird, you’d think men who are desperate to sleep with any women on this island with like 5 of them would fucking cherish a chance and not act like complete asses to the one women willing to let them get off, but nope. Still assholes. Not that our heroine doesn’t just take it. She doesn’t resist, she doesn’t talk back. She just sits there and gets cumming almost immediately. She loves it from any source. Not that this is reflected in how she acts at all. The disconnect is weird. Honestly our heroine has like no character. She talks for exposition and to keep conversations going, but that’s it. She seems to be against sex in the few times it comes up but once she’s in it, she’s loving it.

Verdict and Save

Rule is the better game unless you really want to play as the girl. There’s just to many pointless survival mechanics in this for me that don’t make the game better, just drag it out. It can be good if getting materials wasn’t so slow but each time new gear is needed you are looking at an 1+ of grinding to continue at the least. And you need to beat some tough fights to get to the end so you can’t just ignore gear. The few shops in the game are worthless as none of them sell the items you need to make better weapons and armor or sell good ones to begin with, except for the NG+ merchant who sells everything. Having to fix your stuff constantly as you grind just makes it far to tedious. It could be good but a few to many things hold this game back.

Save has all gear, all scenes unlocked, and at end with all endings available. Her cleanliness is almost at zero so scenes will reflect that, to clean up just go 1 screen north and use the pond to shower.
