So I found the developer Etirue on Steam. Has some games with some buxom girls and with a variety of genres I’d figure I’d give some a try and then decide if I wanted to count them as ecchi or cashgrabs. There’s some actual effort here so I’m counting it as a worthwhile ecchi game to throw into my project.
Crawling Lab, Etirue’s FPS rogue thing was suppose to be first, but that’s still receiving content so I finished this instead. The Last Saintess is a tower defense meets survivor style game.
Story- 2
Undead invasion is happening, this is the last church to the goddess that’s still standing. Your saint takes a relic staff in hand and supports the soldiers. They lose. You technically lose every fight no matter how well you do. That’s it. Only the first stage has a story.
There’s a lore diary in the extras, I didn’t read it.
Gameplay- 4
Cross tower defense and survivor style stuff and you more or less get this. Which is the second time I’m playing something with that mix though this leans more on the defense then the survivor. I’m going to mostly talk about the first level as that’s the hardest and also you are the most limited when playing it.
So you start the game and go into the first level, or the story mode’s only level. After a stilted cutscene your Saintess is standing there and you are told to summon a unit. You have an archer and a sword soldier as options, and that’s all you get for this level. All other units can only be unlocked after lasting 30 minutes here and then playing challenge mode. Same with basically all other gameplay options that aren’t just straight buffs to what the Saintess can do.
So you can summon units. The enemies will walk down the straight line toward you, the like 1 type of them. They will attack the closest summon, or the statue that you are protecting. As your summons kill enemies you gain Holy Power, which you use to summon more units or power your units up. My standard was 2 front liners and the rest were archers in basically every level except #4, which is also the only level where it’s not a straight line to the goal for the enemy.
Anyway, you also gain xp as your units kill. You get 8 options on a level up, the top 4 are gear for your summons for things like just more stats, life drain, double attack, counters and so on. The other 4 are bonuses or changes to your 2 spells and other passive buffs to the Saintess.
The Saintess can summon, walk around to spend Holy Power to power units up, and heal. You have an AOE heal and a single target one. That’s most of your gameplay. Managing MP and spending Holy Power. You can never attack and enemies don’t care about you at all.
Thing is, this first level is hard. Your soldiers can only survive later enemies with a decent number of buffs from Holy Power, so if anyone dies later on your newly summoned units are basically pointless. A lot of the good items for them are locked, and these two unit options are very bland in what they can do. So you will lose. Then you get points to spend on either buffing the Saintess’s base abilities, buy costumes for her, or get runes.
Runes are gacha, common and SSR rarity with random stat buffs on them. Each summonable can equip 1 rune of their class, and you spend your end of run points on these for the chance of getting a buff. Each of your costumes also get treated as separate units for runes, so if you want to wear the swimsuit but the only rune for the Saintess you drew was for the bunny outfit? Well either ignore the rune or wear the damn bunny. It’s an odd choice. I only ever got 1 rune for the protag and never got 1 for my main frontline unit. These really can help beat that first level but after that you don’t need them. Since the other units and gear are actually pretty good.
Each level is beat by lasting 30 minutes, which is also when the bosses spawn. You don’t need to beat the bosses, they just need their jiggle custscenes to play and you are good. Lasting longer is just more points. Each level beat lets you unlock more units, gear, and passive spell buffs.
Lewdness- 3
Most of the girls are big chested and will bounce if they move. You have a model viewer for every women you unlock, and the main heroine has a number of fetish and silly outfits. Can’t do any animations in the viewer though.
That’s really it. The saintess’s eyes bother me, she looks like she’s staring into the void.
Final Thoughts
I liked this more then the other attempt at mixing survivor and tower defense, but it definitely has issues. The Saintess’s eyes for one, but also how boring the game gets. Enemies only have tankier or harder hitting varieties, except for the bosses who only show up 30 minutes into a stage. I would get to a point where I didn’t have to do anything about 15 minutes into my last few runs using HP steal items and the AOE attacking knights. The last stage mixed things up a bit having enemies come from 4 ways, but still it’s just throw out tanky guys and wait.
I like the attempt, but it’s a hard recommend. Also didn’t see the point to the post game bonus difficult stuff. I didn’t need more points after finishing everything and that’s all those modes do. Make the game harder for more points.
Save for The Last Saintess
Save has all outfits, units, artifacts, and spells unlocked.
Gameplay: 4/10 Eroticness: 3/10 Story: 2/10
Completion:
Beat all 4 levels, which means surviving 30 minutes in each. So to the boss spawn cutscene, don’t even have to fight the bosses.
Then farm points if you need to do to unlock the remaining content.
