Tomoyo After ~It's a Wonderful Life~H-Scene Count- 12

Created by Key, translated by Doki fansubs

Length for RPG part- 4-8 hours depending on luck and skill

For this post I’ll be talking about Tomoyo After’s RPG portion, Dungeon’s and Takafumi’s., Key’s first game(fandisc?) with gameplay. Note: All the hscenes are in the main game and not the rpg portion, so while I call it an HRPG all the h is in the visual novel portion. Since the rpg and h are in the same game it still counts. I’ll mainly talk about the RPG, but hscenes will be on there own merit.

The rpg portion of the game is activated after getting all the endings and making some specific choices. It is a table top game created by Takafumi, the titular character’s brother and played by the main character’s in the game. At first there is no plot as the VN characters become there rpg characters, but after a few levels they go in character.

Story

The story is that the Takafumi’s are a clone group, each with there own single personality trait. The original Takafumi is in this cave and the character’s all have there reasons to find him. It gets a little more, but that is how it’s set up.

Gameplay

The gameplay is gambit tactics. Before battle you decide on some conditions and set up skills to be used, ala FF12. You have 4 party members, starting as 3 warrior types and one mage. Experience is shared, and there is a tactic of sending a member to look for items so the mage tends to do nothing until a lot of spells are learned. Each character has 5 personal skills, and 5 class skills which are learned as you level up in one of the 12 classes, which unlock as you level. Each skill has one use per dungeon attempt.

There is a weight system that you can increase by choosing to level up the relevant stat as each character levels(you can choose other stats, but attack and weight are the best ones). This allows you to carry more gear and potions into a trip. Loot is random find after a battle, giving the game a roguelike feeling.

The dungeon is done in 5 floor segments, each ending in a boss battle and a story scene. Upon finishing the 30-35th floor(I can’t remember) the game ends and you get ranked, which does nothing as far as I can tell as the gallery is already full, so whatever go for leaderboards or something.

My biggest problem is a petty one on the equip system. Each character has 2 acc. slots, but in my whole run I found about 3 acc near the end. Why have so many slots for endgame equipment? And since endgame has a time limit of 3-4 tries chances are you will not fill all the slots.

H scenes and other things

H is bad. If you know about h-scenes from Kanon or Air, you know what they will be like. For others, just know they will be short, badly written, happen at seemingly random and have no impact on anything. Art can be considered good, but nothing else is good or stands out.

Its an okay game attempt as Key’s first try. If you are okay with not actually controlling combat, you can have some fun playing with the classes and such, but it is very samey(there are 3 enemy types). Use my save to go straight to the game(it unlocks on the main menu once you play it once) and try out a few floors if you want. While I had fun with it with the injokes and seeing Tomoyo kickass people who are not fans of Clannad, the original story will probably not like the game or the depressing ending to the VN segment that I hate.

So if you like Clannad give it a try. if you like playing with gambits/tactics give it a try. Otherwise its not really a good game, and can be ignored with no loss.

Just a note, this game has been released 3 or more times, and each version’s D&T’s is better then the last. So if Doki ever finish the Memorial Edition(happy end) it might get a better game along with it. Maybe.

Save contains all scenes/Cgs and rpg unlocked.
