Sunrider Academy is a psuedo-sci-fi Ren’py(visual novel engine) dating sim where you court one of four girls each with their own problem usually caused by their personalities over the course of a space year.
Story
You play as Kayto Shields, the vice president of Sunrider Academy serving under his childhood friend, the rule obsessed and calm Ava. She quickly assigns Kayto to be the manager of three trouble clubs that should be shut down, as if he can bring them to a good standing that would reflect well on the council which Ava is trying to make memorable. The three trouble club captains are then introduced and are the three other heroines in the story. Asaga the kendo captain who is lively and a mischief maker who finds rules boring. Chigara the science club captain who is a pure girl, and a genius, but just wants to be a baker. And finally Sola, the swim team captain who is quiet and is behind on technology because she is also the local shrine maiden.
As Kayto, it is the players job to manage school grades and these three clubs while also wooing one of the girls because Kayto made a bet. At the very beginning he grandstands to his sister that he will get a girlfriend by the end of the year, and if he fails his sister will be disappointed in him. While that sounds weak and pointless, Kayto has a deadly reaction to his sister’s disappointment and you can actually get a gameover due to this. So Kayto needs to manage three clubs, keep his grades up to stay on the student council and get a girlfriend. That’s the entire story. Of course each girl will have some issue that you will encounter in their route, and each one of those issues were the types I hate the most but I won’t spoil them.
Gameplay
So immediately after all the characters are introduced you are given control of Kayto’s schedule. For the most part this plays like any standard dating sim, each location and option has a different effect on your stats but unlike a standard dating sim these stats have nothing to do with your dating success. All your stats effect things like success rates of any activity and scores on your exams/winning competitions. Also unlike a usual dating sin you lose stat points every time you sleep, causing you to play catch up constantly, though you can luckily purchase an item that makes these loses lessen.
For the girls you just need to meet them and talk about things they like with a list of topics that grows as your stats do and as you visit places enough, and you do need to get new topics as they bore of old ones after a few uses and they lose affection if they don’t like the topic. You can also do well in a tournament for their club to raise affection by a decent amount, which is the real reason you need to train their club stats up, since if the clubs don’t do well enough you can get a bad end from their failure. And you can flirt with your sister, and by doing this you unlock the standard affection chart to check where the heroines are on loving Kayto. One nice thing is that once a girl reaches max hearts she stops showing up to talk to making the game’s flow faster as you meet the girls less and less outside of actual events.
There are actually a number of bad ends in the game, but the most likely one someone will see is probably the sister disappointment end in the fifth game month out of ten. Near the beginning of that month is basically Valentine’s day and if you haven’t triggered a route and got far enough in that route’s events you get the little sister end and the game stops.
As far as enjoyment, the game can start fun. Things begin hectic as you try to juggle everything as the game adds new rules and things you need to do well to succeed and move on. The problem is the gameplay never changes and in the lower difficulties the end game is just tedious, while in the higher difficulties it just feels unfair. You will likely have gotten your stats high enough that none of the competitions or exams will be failed, and route events are pretty far apart. This means the farther you get into the game the less you actually need to succeed, making it quite boring after a while. If it weren’t for the achievements I probably would have become bored out of my mind during the three other route runs which would have been identical to the first after I entered the route I wanted.
H-Scenes and other stuff
The porn content is alright in my book. Its all vanilla stuff, unvoiced, with art that looks much better then the general character models look. Most of the scenes are just long enough to not feel short and rushed and I felt like the writing was better then most English made h games I’ve played where they rush this stuff(though I personally am glad there is no voice acting, since they would have used English speakers and that just bothers me to hear for some reason, especially in porn). I just wish the scenes weren’t for the most part hours apart due to events being in game days, weeks or months apart when the next event(porn or not) feels like it should have been the next day.
The music I actually liked at first. The game feels like it picks from a list of random songs for when you are doing the main play stuff and when you switch to a day with a competition or a character specific scene a specific song plays. This made the main game’s songs less boring since it wasn’t the same track on repeat while special events had special music. After a playthrough or two though the main game songs did start to feel annoying, but if I spaced out my play time it would have been fine. As for art it uses a standard anime style look. I think the backgrounds look nice and while I like the cgs much more then the character models, the models do look nice and detailed, at least compared to Love In Space’s previous game, Sunrider: Mask of Arcadeus. Which I should mention Academy is an alternate universe so if you played the free Mask of Arcadeus game there will be in-jokes in Academy and you will likely feel closer to the characters.
Final Opinion ad Save
I liked the game when I started it, but after finishing it I never want to touch it again. It did some funny bait and switches in the routes and played on some tropes that made me laugh, but I just wish the second half of the game didn’t exist. By that I mean the second half of the dating sim gameplay as after the Valentine’s day event the gameplay just makes the routes drag on much longer then needed and adds a lot of unnecessary gameplay time to it. That and sometimes you would see an event and the instead of seeing resolution or a character reacting to the event you would have to play a week or two before the next scene which just felt weird and ruined any pacing the story had.
I’m not saying the story or game is bad, just that I got very bored of it by the end. Though I do have one gripe with the writing and that is characters using mouu, which is a Japanese disappointment sound effect. It feels really unnatural to read along with english text, but other then that I thought the writing was fine.
If you like dating sims with porn, this is the first proper dating sim released in English with porn since Pia Carrot’s translation in 2009. This is a nice addition to an almost abandoned form of h-game, and is definitely worth the price. I just wish it wasn’t so artificially long.
Save contains all achievements unlocked(which might make some steam achievements impossible, not sure), and everything else under bonus available. Save should work with steam version, though h scenes would not be available in that version.
