Ouroboros is an RPG Maker MV game that does its goal and theme really well. It has a few flaws but its a decent short game that betrays a few expectations to its benefit.
Story
Welcome to the quest to save the princess from the evil who have taken her! Venture through elemental dungeons to get what you need to save her chasity and the kingdom! Do what heroes do and woo the ladies as you save the land! Kill the bad guy!
That’s the gist of the story, until you finish it and everything breaks. I don’t want to spoil to much even though the prologue more or less gives it away, but it uses that base to create something unique and interesting, at least to me.
Gameplay
Its a normal RPG Maker game, except for two main points. One, you don’t level up. Two, enemies don’t drop gold. So is fighting normal enemies useless? Yes but fights are quick and they exist for a reason in the story so I’ll give that a pass. The main gameplay elements require that I give away the gimmick of the game so without spoiling to much…
The game has a groundhog day gimmick where you go back in time everytime you win. When you go back you lose everything except for drops from the big optional bosses, shiny crack enemies and some later game items. The game is mostly about puzzle solving the world and breaking the order it forces you into as you try to break the loop. As you progress you will be able to skip more and more of the world and gain party members who while will never be as strong as the lead are still good for extra meat shields and some damage.
A big thing I want to point out is that there is a lot of backtracking. I think the least amount of loops you can beat the game in is about 7-8 and for at least half of those you will explore the entire world fully. Thankfully the world is small and the creators where smart, making the needed loop scenes get shorter and enemies just stop showing up as you progress. It ends up making the process a lot less painful that it could’ve been though it can still get annoying if you lose track of what you needed to do. I did and it took 2 extra loops to finally find the end of the game though I did unlock some h scenes while doing that.
H Scenes and other Stuff
The h is varied, to the point that I can’t really point out a major type. It’s mostly vanilla with some threesomes, a lesbian threesome with a tentacle, a foursome, and a couple of other random things. The writing is short and to the point, describing whats happening with only a couple of words. This makes the scenes short but graphic enough to be effective. The art is basic but I feel that goes really well with the game’s theme so I didn’t mind it.
Music and tiles and sprites are mostly all MV generic. I’m not sick of MV’s music yet so it was a nice change from VX’s stuff.
Verdict and Save
So I liked the game. It was different and well thought out with its gimmick never really getting on my nerves. There is one big issues though and its the engine. MV barely works on my computer. I got lag constantly(mainly when opening the menu), the game crashed three times, and sometimes MV wouldn’t accept my input if I was holding the run button. I honestly don’t know if I’ll play another MV game until I get a better computer because these issues can make a game really hard to enjoy.
