SEQUEL series

So apparently there is a series of games called Sequel. It’s a series of RPG Maker games that follow a man in a world where mana is sparse, but men produce it in their semen. There’s a lot of other stuff, as this is a Ys like series, about the lands you travel to and the women you meet who will inevitably have sex with the protag. Very femdom heavy sex, because the lead of the series is very masochistic. Plus most of the girls are just stronger then him, since he can’t fight.

I started the series on Colony, the third entry and moved backwards. I really like the series for the character interactions and the world lore as I find the gameplay tends to fall into the use the all hit attack in every fight issue a lot of dungeon cralwer and RPGs tend to fall into. Until its way to late in the game for me to change and suddenly the game expects me to be grinding to hell and back to manage the last few bosses.

I’m going to write about each game compared to colony, because I already gave colony a full review and the games don’t change that much(I think), I think it will shorten the amount needed for each write up.

blight

I guess every game needs to start with the male having amnesia. I don’t think Ys’ main guy had amnesia in every game, though I guess I only played like five of them and he had amnesia in four of those at least… Anyway, male guy wakes up in a lab and a girl busts down the iron door keeping him in his science room. Dire is also here, so I guess him and the lead are inseparable and have no actual backstory as the only thing I’ve learned about Dire I learned in the third game. Anyway, after getting world plot dump, you leave and the girl kills some robots. Which ends up screwing up one of her friends, who was in charge of one of the robots(that was going to kidnap the guy for mana), and now the friend demands the girl and guy help her finish her quota so she doesn’t get in trouble with the Aurum Company, the only group in the world who take cash. Also, apparently mana is food in this world, among a lot of other things. Like without it everyone dies. While this is mentioned a bit in awake, colony didn’t really talk about why mana disappearing was bad, just that it was/had happened. Another thing this game kind of just throws out there is that birth only requires mana. Girls in this world can have babies without sex, but only women can be born via this. This lead to some oppression that lasted a bit before people realized mana was disappearing and having only girls, who can’t produce the stuff, was not a great thing. That just gets dropped in a side conversation in a random town, but does a lot of world building that made me re-evlaute a lot of locations from the other two games.

So after a bit of adventuring and meeting a random succubus in a cemetery, the group of now five finds a stone that emits mana, apparently forever. Then after that gets stolen kicks off the real plot of who is the main lead? Why was he in a random lab run by the villains of this story? What are these infinite mana sources? Why was the succubus in the cemetery and why does she have amnesia too? Why does the town have the best song in the entire series?

Anyway,

Transport Swords not auto healing you is silly. Why put it as an option I need to select? Really glad that got fixed in the later games.

Same weapon system as awake aka 1h and 2h weapons with side arms if you are using one handed stuff. blight also only has four party members, but has class changing. That changes the entire balance of the game, and might be why this is the only one of the three I’ve played where the non end game stuff was difficult. Partly because the other two taught me that buying gear was pointless as you find better stuff everywhere which is not the case here, and because I can actually build bad characters.

The entire house/home base system is gone(I guess does not exist yet is the right way to word this). While there is still a home base, you can’t raise favoribility by just talking to people, you need gifts and to do quests. H Scenes in general happen as you explore the world doing sidequests and main quests. There also does not seem to be a way to replay conversations which is sad, those are some of the best parts of the games.

As would be expected, I found this the least fun as a game. The characters took a while to grow on me to, so I consider it to be one of the weaker casts.

awake

Yet again our MC wakes in a country he knows nothing about with amnesia, though unlike in colony that amnesia is very important to the plot. He soon meets a few girls who save his life and after getting assaulted by the Monster Women, one of few humans you meet in this entry, you start just kinda going around learning about the Country of Monsters. It takes about 2~ hours before the plot really kicks, and this one is just as man behind the shadows pulling the strings as colony. Just on a much bigger scale, with a lot more people involved. Sex is also more integrated into plot, as a few scenes do happen in the plot instead of porn and story being completely divorced. Scenes also have much more variety in unlock conditions, so it is easy to not see scenes of some characters unless you go out of your way.

In colony, you had four party members each with two skill tress. In awake, you get 12~ party members. each with 1 tree. that the plot takes away and adds back in as it wants. Other then the Monster Women herself, the rest of the party just flips a few times to get you to use everyone before throwing the whole group at you. Then you can build your ideal team, and there’s plenty of options though role wise there are far to many attackers.

Other changes are- The whole weapon system. Instead of inserting runes or whatever, you just buy upgrades and find them as normal. Each character has a two handed or one handed version of their weapon, and the off hand can hold knifes or shields. Each weapon comes with a skill to make them stand out for more then just stats. In fact, that’s all shields apparently do, give you a block damage skill.

World design is very different. colony had a very connected world with a lot of boulders and metal gates being the only thing stopping you from going to late game areas right away. awaken’s world is a lot less connected and more a couple of paths you progress through as the plot demands. Monster strength is usually the reason to not go to far to somewhere the game will take you later, but you can dip into later areas pretty often to find a few items that could help. There’s also a lot more towns as the Country of Monsters has actual people living there unlike the Country of Pests.

I think that’s all the major differences. Of course there’s more variety to who you sleep with do to more people, though this also results in less scenes per character. And that’s it.

Asylum

From the same studio, not technically a game in the Sequel line, but the end game does mention the world of Sequel and is basically a sidestory. I won’t even be surprised if Malice and a few girls from this show up in the next Sequel game with some of the hints they threw out, not to mention that they never actually tell you who Malice is.

As far as the player knows, Malice is a girl who wakes up in kinda purgatory. After dying pretty quickly, she wakes up in a safe haven and is told the basics of Asylum, the world she’s in. 1. You will not die for good so long as your heart doesn’t die. 2. Everyone has amnesia. 3. To leave you must kill the Distortions, aka the area bosses. So Malice sets out to do that with the help of some familiars the boss of the safe haven gives her.

The rest of the plot is kinda bread crumbs threw most of the game until the end where most of the world is explained. Until then the game is very light on dialogue. Malice has no traveling companions other then three silent familiars, so there isn’t a lot for her to say. When she does have someone with her, as an NPC they only talk a few times and its usually about finding the boss of the area instead of banter. I honestly find this the weakest game in the series both story wise and character wise honestly.

A quick side thing before going into the main focus of this game. Malice’s design is ridiculous. I’ve seen porny anime designs, but Malice is basically naked. She has a cape, a single shoulder pad, some weird metal plate above her genitals, and a hat. Nothing on her torso. Her modesty for the player is only kept y her holding her own boobs up into her cape/scarf bit. Even looking at the some of the other weird designs in the series she takes the cake for the most sexual.

The main focus of Asylum is the dungeon crawling/exploring. A lot of the game is just wandering areas trying to find the bosses of the area. Now the other Sequel games have a lot of that to, those games have a lot more plot between exploring. Also, instead of the Guardians floating around as optional bosses, you instead have actual minibosses you have to fight to continue. So this game has a lot more required boss fights then any of the other Sequel games.

The other big change is the familiars. They don’t level up. Only Malice does. Their stat progression is based entirely on finding a certain item and equipment. It’s a weird feeling knowing combat really only exists to make Malice slightly stronger and get some money. Their are three familiar types and you can change between them for each of the familiars as you please, though you will basically always need a tank. No other role nor Malice herself can really take a hit in this game.

Finally, the h scenes. This game is kinda a reversed corruption game. Malice starts out with no sexual knowledge at all. After getting to know what pleasure is, she slowly works her way through each sex act with the three males in camp(including the intelligent wolf) until she knows all the main ways to have sex. She also becomes a sadist basically immediately. Like I think the first time she gives a handjob she already teases and goes way to far with how long she goes at it. Even her first actual experience goes from her almost fainting in pleasure to complete control. Generally anything you’ve seen in the other games you can see here, just more female only stuff. Like tentacles. Or masturbating. Or peeing. Or scat. You even get to see the other three girls get a few scenes if you don’t care of Malice’s body type.

Overall, for actual exploration and combat this might have been my favorite but everything else falls flat, and since I read this series for character and world building that means I didn’t really care for this game.
