Finding stuff on Steam can be a game in of itself. I swear, finding fun interesting things from smaller devs can be a treat, or it can be whatever this is.

So I went to Lewdgamer, just to see if they talked about anything I hadn’t heard about. It’s one of the few news sites I stop at every once in a while to check things out, and I saw this game. I went to Steam and decided it was worth a try. It’s only 4 hours, even if it was bad it would be short.

Finished it. I walked away having no idea who would want this.

Story

Our protag is entering a school wide magic tournament to pay her school debt. She meets her friend, her rival, and the school principal and then just goes. Romance one of them, kind of.

Gameplay

Do a fight, get materials. Use materials to make potions. Potions are either sold for spells/stat buying, or to trade for heroine progress. You can have 4 spells, and there is a variety. I just used the AOE and ice multi hit which let me one turn everything, though if you wanted there are other builds.

The game is set up in 3 14 day periods. A fight takes a day, and you can skip ahead if you do 2 events for a heroine for that period. It ends up being a pretty quick experience. The only challenging fight is Kimi’s final boss, which took actual point buys and leveling to fight. Everything else fell without effort.

H and Other stuff

So a sentiment I see often for games with a focused crowd is that they should change themselves to allow more general people to come into the space. For example, Nikke should put male units in so that more women and gay men will play the game(ignoring that a large chunk of Korean players are already women). Or the Dark Souls easy mode debate, which I put at about the same level as male character in for man fanservice game. Sure, change the core identity of the franchise for a small amount of players. That’ll end well. Just look at all the modern day revivals that went great when they changed the franchises for modern audiences. You’ll only lose like half your audience! Probably more.

The reason I bring that up is I went into this expecting a yuri game. A western yuri game, so no dom/sub obsession. Bondage and swear words I expected. I did not expect the second cg scene for the principal route to be her fucking a male student. So much for it being a yuri game. To be fair, the Steam page does note that there is a male scene in the game. Not that it would be this NTR esque you chose this girl to romance? Well fuck you, watch her screw a boy knowing you are watching. The friend girl is even more what the hell, as she’s giving this random titfuck so he’ll help her get the protagonist. He never shows up again.

Just to be clear, I don’t hate this as a thing, I just wish I knew this going in so I could skip the game. I wanted a yuri game, and I wanted to play at least 1 game from this pretty small indie 18+ group I found on Steam. This 100% looks like a yuri game. So now who do you recommend this to? Who wants a 90% yuri thing but one of the love interest just fucks anyone else? Some people do, I’m sure, but not the general yuri fandom.

So a big reason Sonohana was a big thing was it threw out some tropes from yuri that had been prevalent for years. One of those was this lesbian turns out to be bi kind of thing. Sure, it gives a male player a scene they can insert themselves into, but it’s also content a pure yuri fan doesn’t want. This is the kind of thing you put in a game where you play as a girl who can pursue characters of both genders, not one you put in where all love interests are female.

Sorry about that, but these kinds of content always bugs me. They just don’t make actual business sense regardless of what a bunch of online nobodies want to say about including content for everyone. Only the biggest things can get away with this focus on everything for everyone, small things generally need to focus to attract any audience.

Anyway, every girl route has this sequence for porn- Ecchi pic, then watch them do sex act with random nameless guy, then watch them sleep with a monster, then a sex act with the protag and another guy/girl, then another shared scene, and finally the romance scene followed by the ending scene which is another romance scene. Kimi’s(my last one) route changes the order a bit, but is still the same thing.

It’s.. hard to say who wants that. The writing is fine, with more swears then most of the Japanese stuff I play. The main heroine is just horny all the time, she’s turned on regardless of what she sees or does. Really the whole cast is horny all the time, making the whole being in a relationship thing feel hollow.

Verdict

No idea who actually wants this pseudo NTR almost yuri thing. Sexually it’s trying to be too many things to actually recommend to anyone, the gameplay is basic(not to mention the UI actually just stops working a bunch), and the story is girl needs money and tournament awards money. If the tournament was shady, like Toshin Toshi, maybe you could get a plot out of that. As it is, it’s an h scene train without a real focus.
