Ah, Magica. Not to be confused with the game Magicka where you kill your friends with all kinds different spells, no this is an RPG Maker VXAce game with a decent focus on magic in both comabt and story.

Story

You play as Rena, a witch sent to some continent by her teacher to find a magic book. If she returns without finding it, Rena gets thrown out of the mage’s guild. After leaving the ports, she enters a landlocked town, almost gets into a fight with zero combat spells, gets saved by the resident awesome mage, and the player is told where to go and can start playing.

One thing before I continue, where the hell is the port? There is no place in the game that has boats or a big enough source of water to sail on, so how did she get to the town? I know its not a big issue, but why say she rode a boat when you might as well have teleported her there or not mentioned it.

Anyway, the mage girl who helped you tells you to go to her shop, where she tells you about her husband who was a magic investigator who was killed a few years back while investigating a village that was completely destroyed 9 years ago. Thanks to his research, the mage has an idea of where the book is and tells you. The rest of the game proceeds in one of three ways, to three very different endings.

1. You find the book and unlock its powers(its blank when you find it), and get either a bad or good ending based on number of times raped.

2. You pray at all the goddess statues which allows you to enter the bad religion’s headquarter and join them.

3. You do all the good stuff you can do, never get violated or lower your sensibility stat, and investigate all you can about the village that was destroyed. This eventually leads to the true ending, and its a bit hard to find.

All the endings work and its nice to have more then just whore and virgin endings. The only issue I have is how hard it can be to find the 2nd and 3rd ones since they require some out of the way events to complete. Plus your first time through there is a very hard boss you need to beat, and if you lose you get raped and lose out on the third ending since you lost some sensibility. He kind of roadblocks the true end, and you would need to grind a lot to beat him on your first run. On NG+ he’s kind of a joke though.

Anyway, to sum it all up, the game is about magic. What is happening, has happened, or about the magic book everything revolves around magic. I like that the theme is constant, with each ending showing a different path that involves magic, including the player encountering three legendary level spells and even being able to learn two of them. The game has enough story to give a player direction, but not kill exploration completely. It has a nice balance, and is my preferred style for an RPG Maker game.

Gameplay

Okay, the combat is simple turn based, but with a worthless attack option and defend replaced with a move called concentrate, which gives you a bit of MP back. Your character cannot equip a weapon so her attack power will always be low and so your main damage is magic.

You learn spells not by leveling, but by buying magic with mana. You get a point of mana per cast of a damage spell in battle, so not only is your attack worthless, but you want to use magic so that you can learn more magic. You spend the points in the magic guild in the first town. You talk to a crystal and get sent to a room with more crystals that you can interact with to spend mana to learn magic, and these crystals have an order to them to stop you from learning the best spells until you learn the weaker ones. You start the game with 15 mana, just enough to learn one attack and heal and you cannot leave the first town until you learn an attack spell.

The spells all fit different roles. Fire hits everyone but is weak, ice can paralyze and only hit a single, lightning hits several times so its good on bosses, light and dark do debuffs, and there are several support spells. This is nice, since it’s like you are picking a class early on and gives you control of how your character evolves through the game. Getting mana is easy enough that if you want to farm spells you can, and some enemies even drop items that give some mana when used. Some h scenes even give some bonus mana.

Monsters are visible on the map, so no random encounters. Enemies chase you when you get close, but you can try to sneak. Unlike other RPG Maker games, shift makes you walk slower so you can try to be stealthy. Your natural run speed is increased though so I have no problems with sneak mode, even if I never used it. Enemies will begin to run from you once you level enough.

The game has a lewdness stat, called sensibility. It starts at 100 and can fall to 1.  The lower the stat, the worse things the MC will do, like steal from stores or prostitute herself. There is no way to raise sensibility, it can only fall and is easy to have lower. You need 100 to learn one of the best spells(and get the best ending), which is a pain. Some scenes will not trigger until Rena gets penetrated for the first time regardless of her sensibility.

The game has a clothes ripping mechanic, which is for two things. One, getting arrested for two secret areas and some h scenes. Two, getting the lewd monsters to use their h attacks(which lower sensibility), which are scenes in the gallery.  Clothes have three levels of destruction; full, halfway, and mostly ripped. One single attack, even if it misses, that can rip clothes will do it. So it is very easy to lose some sensibility to a monster because you ran out of clothes. Clothes are fixed with an item, and later on you get a more powerful version of that item that makes the middle stage last three attacks.

As I said above, you cannot equip weapons. Instead of traditional gear, Rena can equip three things. A circlet, a bangle, and an orb. Circlet’s give you status immunity and bangles boost your HP/MP or give some magic buff. Orbs give you spells. Each orb has a spell tied to it, and elemental resists to go along with it. So orbs can supplement your magic if like me, you only went down one magic tree for most of the game.

Overall, the combat is boring. I used ice magic and paralyzed most of the enemies I fought. While sometimes I felt threatened, it was rare and I did the same things in almost every fight. You do get a lot of spell options, and one of the final spells lets you act twice in a row, which gives you more control in a fight. I like how the combat fits the magic theme, but I still felt the combat was uninteresting and there were way to many enemies in the field and dungeon areas. It wasn’t the most boring RPG Maker combat I’ve experienced, but it still was nothing great.

H-Scenes and other stuff

The game has corruption style h scenes. The lower your sensibility, the more slutty Rena gets and the worse situations she will get into. It’s written alright, with the starting and ending Rena’s being different enough when it comes to sex to make the corruption apparent and not throwaway. The scenes are of an alright length, varying between really short(monster scenes) and medium length.

The scenes are unvoiced and besides one pseudo animated scene, are still images. The writing itself is fine, though scenes in the same chain(as in same series of events and use the same cgs) of events tend to have repetitive text between the versions, which got annoying since sometimes I couldn’t tell if the scene was new since the wording was so similar. That is even the case in one scene chain where the second scene only has a different opening and is the same for the rest.. The variety is alright, with mostly rape style stuff near the beginning and becoming consensual because Rena turned into a slut. There is one series of scenes with a character other then Rena which are alright, and end with a creepy non h scene of the girl staring at you through a hole in the wall. The stand out fetish scenes are tentacle, hotdogging, sleeping, husband stealing, and a weird one were Rena gets a tentacle in her ear that mind breaks her to orgasm with little actually happening, and a single bestiality scene with a werewolf.

The scenes are easy to find(except a few) and random NPCs will even give out clues to what you need to do to get scenes. If a battle will end with a scene Rena will even point it out for the player. A few will require some hunting, but if you are thorough they should all come easily.

The only issue I actually have with the h scenes of Magica is Rena’s body shape/texture. The top half is fine, beyond how overly thin she is compared to her bust size which is not huge but on the bigger side(though the shape of said breasts felt a big weird at times…). No, my problem is the lower half. Specifically, her thighs. Rena has a big ass, and has the thighs to go with them. Her thighs are bigger then any I’ve ever seen, beating out 400 lb women. While not exactly boner killing, it just seemed odd to me how thick they were and sometimes I would just stop and wonder how the fuck someone has thin as Rena gets thighs the size tree trunk. Beyond that issue, the art is fine and has a strange gleam with the female’s skin that few other games have which I like.

Several of the music tracks are not generic RPG Maker, and neither of the three female leads sprites are either. Most everything else is basic stuff.

Save contains all scenes unlocked, gallery access(have to beat the game first), all spells, and on NG+ with max sensibility so if you want to go for any ending it’s possible.
